Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli conquered race 1 of the 7th round of the Superbike World Championship, by taking advantage of three big crashes ahead of him. In the final stages of the last lap Chaz Davies (Ducati) crashed out of the lead and was hit by Rea, with Rea able to pick up his bike to finish third, behind winner Sykes and second placed Lowes. Before that incident, Marco Melandri (Ducati) also crashed out when fighting for a podium finish and he would ultimately finish 15th.
Michael van der Mark (Yamaha, sponsored by BMC) also spectacularly crashed out at turn 13 with 7 laps to go, with Rea close by, after the Dutchman had led for most of the race. Van der Mark took over at the front from provisional leader Rea in the early stages and had built up a big lead at one stage before his advantage decreased and then he went down.
Marco Melandri (Ducati) took an exciting win in race 2 (starting from tenth on the grid), with Kawasaki Racing Team pair Jonathan Rea and Tom Sykes also on the podium.
Both the Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team (sponsored by BMC) riders saw progress at Misano. Alex Lowes registered a season best second place in race 1 and Michael van der Mark matching his best previous 2017 finishes in fourth place on Sunday. Van der Mark had also shown strong potential by leading Race 1 before a crash.
