The WEC restart from Nürburgring after the 24 Hours of Le Mans
The 6 Hours of Nürburgring is to be held at the famous German circuit from 14 to 16 July. This is the 4th round of the 2017 WEC (World Endurance Championship) where many teams involved are equipped by BMC. The German appointment will be a small revenge after the 24 Hours of Le Mans (the race that is worth more than a championship), where Porsche won the Prototype class and Aston Martin the GT Class. Toyota, Ferrari, Ford and Porsche will try to reach a revenge after Le Mans, in the respectively classes.
In keeping with the pattern introduced three years ago, the final European clash of the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship takes teams to Germany’s Eifel Mountains and the Nürburgring’s 5.148km ‘Grand Prix Strecke’ course. The final phase of the competition will then kick off in September with visits to Mexico and the USA, before moving on to Japan, China and the season’s mid-November finale in Bahrain.
The 6 Hours of Nürburgring is the first FIA WEC round to take place since June’s Le Mans 24 Hours. The different teams and drivers will consequently have set themselves individual goals, with some eager to repeat the success they enjoyed in the French classic, and others keen to make amends for not having been able to showcase their true potential in La Sarthe.
This year’s visit to the Nürburgring has been brought forward one week compared with last year and it looks like the weather will be fine, with the thermometer reaching up to 20°C, and track temperatures peaking slightly higher than that as a function of how much sun the different parts of the circuit receive.
The Grand Prix Strecke was built in 1984 and features an identical number of left- and right-hand turns (eight of each). The surface isn’t particularly hard-wearing, although the track is reputed for inducing a certain amount of under-steer. Due to restrictions introduced for 2017, the LM P1 and LM GTE Pro runners will be limited to three sets of tyres for free practice, plus a further four for qualifying and the race itself, along with two so-called ‘joker’ spares. This ruling will require teams to pay particular attention to longevity and run double stints.
